چکیده

The effects of different Cucurbita spp. rootstocks on melon cultivars belonging to different horticultural groups were studied by comparing grafted plants with non-grafted ones under greenhouse and open ®eld growing conditions. Winter melons (Cucumis melo L.) of the Inodorus group, cvs. `Thraki', `Peplo' and `Lefko Amynteou', and a summer melon of the Cantalupensis group, cv. `Kokkini Banana', were used as scions. The commercial hybrids of Cucurbita spp. `TZ148' and `Mamouth' and the landrace of winter squash (C. moschata L.) `Kalkabaki' were used as rootstocks. The commercial rootstocks were compatible with all scion cultivars tested, while the landrace was compatible with the three cultivars but with lower survival ratios. Generally, differences in stem diameter between Cucurbita and Cucumis reduced the survival ratio of grafts. Fruit yield was not affected by any rootstock. Descriptive and qualitative characteristics of the fruit of the grafted plants were similar to those of the intact ones, except for taste and texture, which showed a remarkable deterioration in some of the stock/scion combinations tried. The deterioration was more severe under protection. However, all Cucurbita spp. rootstocks were found acceptable for honeydew melons (cv. `Lefko Amynteou'), with C. moschata (cv. `Kalkabaki') being the best. The landrace of C. moschata is recommended as a source of breeding material for rootstocks of honeydew melons. # 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Microplot Evaluation of Rootstocks for Control of Meloidogyne incognita on Grafted Tomato, Muskmelon, and Watermelon.

Microplot experiments were conducted over two years (four growing seasons) to evaluate Meloidogyne incognita resistance in rootstocks used for grafted tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), muskmelon (Cucumis melo), and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). Three tomato rootstocks; 'TX301', 'Multifort', and 'Aloha', were tested in addition to the nongrafted scion, 'Florida-47'. Two muskmelon rootstocks; Cucu...

Use of Cucumis metuliferus as a Rootstock for Melon to Manage Meloidogyne incognita.

Root-knot nematode-susceptible melons (Cantaloupe) were grown in pots with varying levels of Meloidogyne incognita and were compared to susceptible melons that were grafted onto Cucumis metuliferus or Cucurbita moschata rootstocks. In addition, the effect of using melons as transplants in nematode-infested soil was compared to direct seeding of melons in nematode-infested soil. There were no di...

Expression of ascorbate oxidase isoenzymes in cucurbits and during development and ripening of melon fruit

At least 14 ascorbate oxidase (AO) isoenzymes with isoelectric points in the range of pH 3 /10 have been identified and their expression profile studied in various Cucurbitaceae tissues and during development and ripening of melon fruit (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus). At least four acidic AO isoenzymes were mainly located in the apoplastic fraction, whereas 10 basic AO isoenzymes were found...

The cucurbit images (1515-1518) of the Villa Farnesina, Rome.

BACKGROUND The gorgeous frescoes organized by the master Renaissance painter Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520) and illustrating the heavenly adventures of Cupid and Psyche were painted between 1515 and 1518 to decorate the Roman villa (now known as the Villa Farnesina) of the wealthy Sienese banker Agostino Chigi (1466-1520). Surrounding these paintings are festoons of fruits, vegetables and flowers p...
